Glasgow, the second largest city in Scotland, is a beautiful bustling city filled with Victorian architecture and delicious food. Walking around you feel like you were transported into a Harry Potter movie, especially when visiting the University of Glasgow. The Scottish people are so welcoming and inviting and happy to see an outsider visiting their lovely city. If you’re lucky enough to visit this wonderful city, here is what I recommend!
Things To See:
♦ The Kelvingrove Museum- Not only is this museum unbelievably amazing, it’s also free!
♦ Kelvingrove Park- Located right next to the museum is this beautiful park which has the River Kelvin running through it. Perfect for a mid day stroll
♦ University of Glasgow- A must see for beautiful architecture. It will make you want to go back to school!…almost.
♦ Cloisters at the University of Glasgow- As if the University itself wasn’t gorgeous enough, there are the amazing cloisters which is architecture at it’s finest
♦ Glasgow Green – This is another gorgeous park located in the east end of Glasgow
♦ The amazing Victorian architecture everywhere
Things To Do:
♦ Visit all of the amazing museums. My favorite are the Kelvingrove and the Hunterian Museum and Art which is located in the University of Glasgow
♦ Climb The Lighthouse for spectacular views of the city
♦ Tour Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Located in the West End of Glasgow, there are beautiful greens and glasshouses
♦ Have afternoon tea at the Willow Tea Room
♦ Explore the cobblestone lined Ashton Lane and all of the pubs located there
♦ Sip Scotish Whisky at The Pot Still
♦ Make friends with a friendly Scot and try to understand what they’re saying while having a conversation
Where To Stay:
♦ 15 Glasgow – This boutique bed & breakfast is a beautifully restored Victorian townhouse located between the city center and the West End. I loved staying here.
♦ Blythswood Square – A modern luxury hotel located close to the Kelvingrove Museum
What To Eat:
♦ A full Scottish breakfast- Includes a half roasted tomato, bacon, tattie (potato) scone, link sausage, sauteed mushrooms, baked beans, one egg, and black (blood) pudding. This full breakfast will definitely keep you full until lunch!
♦ Scottish porridge- not a typical sweet oatmeal like we’re used to
♦ Haggis, neeps, and tatties – This is considered the National dish of Scotland. To put it nicely it’s Sheep…insides… mixed with oatmeal and spices and made into a savory “pudding” (more like a meatloaf) and served with mashed potatoes and mashed rutabaga. I had this for dinner one night and surprisingly enough it wasn’t bad! Hey, when in Scotland.
♦ Any/all seafood
♦ Scotch eggs – hard boiled egg, wrapped in sausage, coated in bread crumbs, and deep fried
♦ Scottish Shortbread – buttery, delicious cookies that you cannot get enough of
♦ Scottish BUTTER – oh my goodness. Butter like you’ve never tasted before. Salty and rich… basically heaven
♦ Drink ALL Scottish Whiskey
Where To Eat:
Breakfast-
♦ St. Louis Cafe – serves breakfast all day
♦ Kember and Jones – great bakery and coffee
♦ Stravaigin – innovative Scottish food, great brunch (and lunch and dinner!)
Lunch/Dinner-
♦ Ox and Finch – amazing tapas style dishes. Hard to get in to because it’s so popular so I recommend trying it at lunch!
♦ The Butchershop Bar and Grill – award winning steakhouse
♦ Crabshakk – great spot for some Scottish seafood
♦ The Wee Curry Shop – the UK is known for their amazing Indian food, and this is the best spot to get it
♦ Porter & Rye – amazing dry-aged meat dishes. Try their mac and cheese, OH and they have delicious cocktails!
♦ Cafe Gandolfi – Traditional Scottish food and a Glasgow staple. Try the haggis, neeps, and tatties!
♦ Ubiquitous Chip – one of my favorites. Located in Ashton Lane, this this restaurant is like having a fine dining experience in the greenhouse
Where To Drink:
♦ The Pot Still – literally hundreds of whiskies from all over. The staff is so passionate and is quick to let you taste a few before ordering
♦ The Drum & Monkey – once a bank is now a large pub
♦ King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut – fun venue to watch local bands while sipping a pint
♦ Lebowskis – have a white Russian and take it easy man
♦ The Ben Nevis – small intimate pub with a large whisky selection and craft beers on tap
♦ Porter & Rye – although this is a restaurant this place has literally the best whiskey drink I’ve had in my entire life
♦ Kelvingrove Cafe – old restored classic bar
