Chernobyl to this day is still one of the most catastrophic nuclear accidents that has ever happened. On April 26, 1986 No.4 reactor suffered a disastrous power increase, leading to explosions in its core which caused a massive fire and nuclear isotopes being shot up into the atmosphere with traces being found as far as Sweden. The people of Chernobyl, unaware of what happened, were given less than 24 hours to evacuate while a brave team worked to contain the radiation and prevent a further catastrophic explosion. The pictures below are not from the explosion itself, but the abandonment of the city decaying over time. It is now available to visit (yes, it’s safe) and with my friends at Cobblestone Freeway Tours and SoloEast I was able to tour the haunting area of Pripyat and Chernobyl which feels like a set of The Walking Dead.
