I emerged from my bus as though I was emerging from a spaceship that had just landed on Mars. Dramatic sandstone mountains and copper toned sand was as far as the eye could see. This incredibly ethereal desert was, besides seeing Petra, my favorite part of Jordan. The desert was begging for exploration, to which I happily obliged and set off in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia. With my friends at My Jordan Journey I explored this incredible place and if you’re ever ever lucky enough to get to this beautiful desert, here’s what I recommend!
First, pinch yourself to make sure you haven’t been transported to Mars
Check in to a traditional Bedouin camp. I loved staying at Sun City Camps!
Get decked out with the traditional Bedouin eyes and scarf! (yes, men wear the eyeliner too)
Hop on a camel to explore
Once your legs get tired from trying to hold on, hop in the back of a 4×4 to explore even more
Take a tea or Bedouin coffee break
Be sure to be on the lookout for ancient Nabatean inscriptions that date back thousands of years
Hike up one of the many sand dunes for optimal views
Make friends with all of the pet camels
Find the perfect place to watch the magical sunset
After sunset, head out deep into the desert (with the help of a local of course) to enjoy a bonfire and homemade tea under the uninterrupted night sky. Don’t forget to look up!
Wake up EARLY (I’m talking 5 am) to catch the breathtaking sunrise over the desert. You won’t regret it
Have fun! The Bedouin people are amazing and always entertaining. My friend Joanna (owner of the incredible Hayo Magazine) and I couldn’t stop laughing the entire time. It’s a magical place that should be seen by all
